10Y + 1H Framework

May 19th, 2023

Perspectives on time dictate how we view our lives. The time we spend with others, the results we achieve, how long it takes to find success, almost everything has a hint of time sprinkled in for additional context. The two frameworks worth prioritizing are the 10-year (10Y) and 1-hour (1H) perspective. Hammer these into your mind and unlock the massive doors blocking you from finding both short-term and long-term success. Success that will be discovered regardless of your field, but found purely by stacking the bricks of daily action contributing to the overall, long-term vision. 10 years from now, where will you be if you focus on 1-hour intervals?

For the best contrast in perspectives, the differences have to be stark. In 10 years there are 87,660 hours. This means 1 hour is 00.0011% of the 10-year journey. This is intended for this framework. 10 years is the base long-term period used because it is traditionally longer than almost everyone else typically thinks. Most people do not know what they will be doing in 1 year let alone 3, or 5; now double it and we get to 10. 10 years ago I was getting ready to start high school. 10 years from now is a lifetime away. 10 years is also used because a lot of the deeply meaningful “successes” in life are long-term endeavors. Building a business from the ground up, growing a family, getting into the best shape of your life, and becoming the 1% of your craft all fall into general time categories of 10-plus years.

How we get to where we will be in 10 years starts with the shorter time block, the 1-hour period. 1 hour is specifically used because of how short the time period is. It is much easier to conceptualize and follow through on our thoughts when we only need to commit to 60 minutes of focused effort. These 1-hour increments can be grouped into periods of time where we start and finish something within an hour. 1 hour and 1 accomplishment. 1 hour and 1 good workout. 1 hour and 1 chapter written. 1 hour and 1 quality experience with your partner. The key for these periods is that you finish with a feeling of accomplishment. After the 1 hour block, we do not want to feel we wasted our time. For 1 hour, we have locked in and achieved everything intended to be done in that time frame. How the 1-hour scales is by using these periods—repeatedly day after day— to work on the 10-year project in mind.

Short-term effort turned into long-term results. Live the 10-year and 1-hour framework to realize this opportunity. Zoom out to zoom back in and focus on what is desired.
