Be Selfish for Your Sake

May 9th, 2023

There is nothing wrong with prioritizing yourself. There is nothing wrong with changing. There is nothing wrong with those around you “missing the old you.” The days and time go by and change has to occur. Sometimes, being selfish is not only the best course of action, it is the only course of action to effectively pursue our individual dreams and desires. We are in control and lead our own lives, not anyone else. We are allowed to pursue our own dreams freely. It sometimes takes individual actions to drive the individual results we crave.

The following quote from Alex Hormozi creates the exact perspective required to view selfishness as a positive when applying it to your own life.

“You have to let other people’s dream of you die, so that your dream can live. There’s only so much of you to go around. Everyone is trying to get you to be the version of you that best serves them."

This quote explains how limited our individual time is. It explains that people are “selfish” and want us for the benefit we can provide to them. In being individually selfish, we take back some of our time and pursue our best selves on our own terms. Everyone has an idea of what we should be. Only we know the true idea of what we want to be. Through letting their dream for us die, we can cultivate and grow the garden of our own dreams in our own lives. It is simple, our lives and our terms.

No one else can live our individual lives. We can share experiences and live in close companionship with others but we are the only people capable of experiencing the world from our exact perspectives. No one else can go into our minds and feel our drive to become a doctor. No one else in can go into our mind to feel why we would rather be involved with theater than play on the basketball team. No one else can go into our minds to feel why we don’t want to join the corporate ladder and instead opt for the entrepreneur path. No one can feel our exact desires. No one can live our own lives for us. We lock ourselves into the driver’s seat of the vehicle carrying us through life when we are selfish for our individual sake. We are able to make decisions on the best use of our time for our own pursuits. Putting yourself first in this way is not a bad thing— be selfish for your sake.
