Enough is Enough

April 22nd, 2023

Change starts from within and change takes a realization. It takes a realization that a difference is not only wanted, but needed. Once this realization occurs, there then needs to be action. The action, compounded on a consistent basis is what drives new habits, instills a drive to continue, and ultimately, produces the results required. Speaking previously on the need to avoid sunk costs, and to pivot before things are too late. When is it enough for you to finally realize a change is needed? Understanding what you are in control of, when is enough, enough? What flip needs to change in your mind before tomorrow is different—before the rest of today… is different?

With every deep-rooted desire to change there are weeks, months, or even years of buildup happening before the dam breaks. Everyone has a limit and once that final straw is broken, the floodgates open and things have to change. Powerful stories to me are about how people finally make the change to lose weight. They finally have that one thing happen where they stop what they are doing and immediately look to change. Whether it be not being able to run and jump around with their child or seeing someone you know in the drive-through line, like Thomas DeLauer, these final straws impact individuals in ways that prompt change. Almost no status is permanent, most are conditional and simply take a different approach, different habits, or a different perspective to unlock.

Weight loss is not the only category where that final straw matters. Flipping a switch and realizing things must, and will, be different can be with anything.

Does it take picking up liquor from the store for the 3rd time this week…for the 30th week in a row, to finally make you crack and want to reassess your drinking habits?

What about putting one more box in that room so now you cannot even walk in? Does that make you want to start cleaning? Just one box at a time.

Or how about your third divorce, do you still think you are not the problem? Look inward and see how you can be different.

The changes can occur anywhere and can be from any individual realization. The point is at some point enough is enough. Gone is your will to keep living how you have been. You look back with disgust and question the way things were before. That path is broken. A new path and journey is beginning and you are not looking back. A change will disrupt your normal habits but the benefits will far outweigh anything resembling your prior way of life. In these cases, enough is finally enough to change for the better.
