First or Last

September 6th, 2023

There are first moves and last moves with anything. Sometimes the first move is the most important move of all. Other times, it is the final move that matters the most. With any endeavor we commit to in life, there is a first, and there is a last. Understanding the importance of each is critical to making sure that we respect the process that will unfold, or has already unfolded. One is the first step in a journey to reach the end. The other is the icing on the cake cementing what has already been done. First or last, which step are you on? Which step needs your focus and attention now?

There are situations where the first step is the main hurdle to overcome. Think of waking up early. Your alarm goes off. You have thoughts racing in your head about rolling over and going back to sleep. The first step is swinging your legs from under the covers and onto the floor. After that one step, you are up and awake. Without that first step, you are back asleep like nothing happened. If you want to read more, the first step is opening the book. You cannot read a closed book. Open it and one page turns to the next. One step and now you’re reading. Want to journal or write your thoughts? Write one line. One sentence. With that first step complete you are now writing. The first steps signify beginnings. They signify starting something new.

There are also situations where the last step is the most important. The last brick being built into the building. Without it, the construction is incomplete. With it, the building is finalized and operational. The last line of code for an app in development. Without it, the app does not work. With it, it is a finished product that can be sent to users. The final round of revisions for your book. Without it, the project is still in limbo. With it, now you can ship it out as a completed set of writing. The last set of a workout. Without it, your workout will not feel complete. With it, you will feel accomplished and ready to attack the rest of your day. The last step signifies totality. They signify a completion of effort.

In your own life, take inventory of what you are currently doing. If you are struggling to make a change, form a habit, or become the person you want to be, the first step is what is most important to you. If you have a project in limbo, a conversation that needs closure, or a desire to move on, find a way to commit to that final step and put the icing on the cake. First or last? Do you need to start or do you need to finish what is in front of you?
