Life Has Acts

June 9th, 2023

Life is like a play. There is an introduction, there are many acts, and then there is a conclusion. The one constant between everyone’s “play of life” is there is a beginning, when you are born, and an end, when you die. The acts making up the “body” of the play are completely unique for everyone. It is important to note that the “play of life” does not only have one body act. Since we are the writers and actors of our play, we can narrate and shape our lives however we want to. We do not need to commit to any one thing and we always have the ability to change what is next. Our play features a constantly evolving and changing script depending on what we are doing with our lives at any particular moment. Each change and each pivot starts the beginning of a new body act. There will never be just one act in our play when we have the ability to write our script.

By recognizing and understanding that the body of our play makes up the vast majority of our lives, we can constantly look to create a better experience. Each act is a different phase in our life and we can expect a new phase to appear often. With any significant change in our life, we welcome a new act.

Going to college is a new act.

Getting a first job is a new act.

Retiring from sports is a new act.

Getting married is a new act.

Starting a family is a new act.

Backpacking across Europe is a new act.

Moving across the country is a new act.

Whatever the situation, we welcome the transition and view it as another part of our overall “play.”

Major changes are not the only parts of life that are recognized for having their own acts. If we look back in time, the skills and tasks of our daily lives have assuringly changed when compared to today. Looking forward, we are able to start today and change what our future looks like.

If we want to start learning a new language, that is the start of a new phase.

If we want to learn a new skill, beginning is the start of a new phase.

If we want to become more flexible, taking yoga classes is the start of a new phase.

Whatever the desired change, as long as we are still alive, we are able to begin that new act in the play that is our life. It is almost never too late to start anew and welcome a new act. There is no need to become complacent or bored when we are the scriptwriter to our own lives. Start a new act, and see where it goes.
