Not Everything is Fun
June 11th, 2023
Some of the most enjoyable things in life are what requires the least effort. Being lazy and watching television on the couch. Sleeping in until your body forces you awake. Ordering food instead of home cooking. Choices that when taken out of moderation, can change the mechanics of your life. Not everything in life is fun and not everything in life is easy. There will be countless events, chores, tasks, and requirements you do not enjoy or want to do but must be done. There will be periods of time where the “fun” of something seems imaginary because of how much you loathe something. Greatness and change do not form from only doing the fun and easy thing. Greatness and change are specifically formed when you challenge yourself to do when your mind is screaming at you to pull back and ease up. Fun is not required, action and accountability are.
Parts of life just are not enjoyable. But they are a part of life. This perspective makes everything else easier. You can still live a happy life knowing there are parts that you do not enjoy. In this understanding, you are pushed to find solutions to change. You are pushed to find ways to make things fun or enjoyable. If you do not like your job, your choices are to either find a new one you enjoy or quit and not get paid. Otherwise, you must endure what is not fun. Either find a solution or deal with it, life goes on either way.
The same perspective is applied to any habit we want to incorporate into our lives. We choose to sleep in because it is the easy and enjoyable thing to do. If we want to change this habit to improve our time usage and personal accountability, we need to embrace something that is not fun. It is not fun to wake up early compared to sleeping in. If we want to change, then we must accept the change will not be fun. Over time, as we adopt this change we will find ways to appreciate it. But, each morning when that alarm goes off, the first thought in your mind is not going to be, “This is so fun!”
Many people choose to live in a personal world where hard and unenjoyable things are avoided. They maintain the habits and practices that are easiest and provide the path of least resistance. Or, they accept their circumstances and choose to not enjoy their life. People who lean into finding solutions to things they do not like in their life or focus on creating new, challenging habits, will find more rewarding outcomes and ultimately, more fun. Create an enjoyable life for yourself through an acceptance that everything in life is not always fun.
