Pursuit of Excellence Today
June 12th, 2023
It has never been easier to pursue excellence in anything than it is today. When my parents grew up, if they wanted to learn new facts about something, they most likely had to go to the library and read an encyclopedia and hope it was in there. If they wanted to learn a skill, they either had to learn it themselves or find someone in their relative proximity that could and would teach it to them. There was no instantaneous communication outside of faxing or calling someone on the telephone. There was a challenge in finding knowledge to pursue excellence.
Today, and in the near future, there has never been an easier time to pursue excellence. In my life, we have transitioned from personal computing with computers to mobile computing with smartphones and after Apple’s latest announcement, we may all be transitioning to “spatial computing” soon. Almost everyone has access to the internet and a smartphone in their pocket. The world’s answers are just a few clicks away. Previously mentioned is the idea that learning is hindered by one’s curiosity, not one’s access to information. The same effect comes with pursuing excellence.
If you are complacent and are okay with repeating your day-to-day life with no change, you can absolutely do that. If you have a desire to change and learn something new, become the top 1% at something, or just want to get better in areas of your life, the access to unlock this potential has never been easier. YouTube and countless other media sites can teach us how to cook certain recipes. They can teach us how to do home improvements. They can teach us new drills and ways to practice the sport we want to improve at. They can teach us new languages. They can paint us a picture of the world so we know where to travel. We just need to look. Through any of these practices and by filling our desires, we are pursuing excellence in our interests.
The pursuit of excellence is no longer limited by access to information. Just like learning is limited by our curiosity, the pursuit of excellence is simply limited by desire and drive. Nothing more and nothing else. There is no excuse for not having access to information. There is no excuse for not finding people to learn from. Almost everything is accessible at the click of a couple of buttons on the internet. Drive and desire are the sole, determining factors in how great we want to become. If we have the drive and desire, we will make the time to consume. The time to consume the content and knowledge we need in order to grow and improve. As we consume we will find the time to practice and hone our ability to do. Pursue excellence today.
