The Infinite Game

June 17th, 2023

Life has no set duration. It is infinite until it is not. The end date is not known to any of the beholders of life. It simply begins spontaneously and ends in the same way. Life is finite once it is over but in the time before the ending, it is an infinite experience that must be cherished. In a similar sense, life’s journey does not end when you reach a goal. When you climb that particular peak your life does not end. You find a way to climb another peak, to find something new to do. The destination is not the end, it is merely the first step to something new.

In assessing what the Infinite Game of life really means it is important to view this scope through particular frameworks. Getting in shape is not the goal you must have. You do not get to move on from this idea once you feel you are in shape. That is the finite view. The infinite view is staying in shape for the rest of your life. You continue on even when the first goal was reached. Getting married is not the goal you must have. You do not move on once you say yes at the altar. That is the finite view. The infinite view is staying married. You say yes and continue working to grow that relationship, infinitely.

Most of the “games” worth playing in life are Infinite Games. They lead you to a destination and then that destination opens up to a highway of other avenues to continue working. Each side street is another way to continue pushing past the finite in search of the infinite rewards. Success is an infinite game. Success is an abstract, individualistic term that everyone defines differently. Reaching success does not mean your pursuit is over. That would be the finite perspective. Viewing success via the Infinite Game lens is that you continue to do things that make you successful, you continue seeking regardless of the initial “wins” you find.

Life must be enjoyed as if it is an infinite game with a finite amount of time. The infinite always conquers the finite frame. Reach outward and continue. Do not put constraints on what you consider a great life to be. Constraints will keep you in the finite, push to search for infinite solutions. Play the Infinite Game and enjoy life.
