Yin and Yang of Obsession

Obsession is a way of life for high achievers. The best of the best have lived lives where they obsess over their passions, pursuits, and purpose for life. They obsess in a way where the obsession becomes a part of them. They obsess in a way where what they obsess over is a needed stimulant in their life. As bad as they need to breathe, they need their obsession. Obsession and the ability to continue onward when others can’t, or won’t is the reason they are the best at what they do. Masters are made through obsession. But there is a Yin and a Yang to the path of obsession. There is the good obsession and there is the bad obsession. Both are obsession, but one is a sustainable path and one is a math burning at both ends.

Bad obsession is consumption-based action. Everything around is taken with the goal of fueling the obsessive fire. Relationships, conversations, wisdom from others, resources, and anything of value are streamlined for how they can benefit you and your goal—you and your obsession. Bad obsession, in this consumptive way, will eventually engulf you. The match that’s burning at both ends will cease to exist. You will have burned away any relationships in your life through the razor-thin focus you have on your obsession. Obsession in this way engulfs you and eats you alive. You may find success and realize your obsession but it will be at the cost of sacrificing fixtures in the other aspects of your life. Bad obsession has a cost.

Good obsession is creation-based action. You maintain focus on your obsession but you are able to smell the roses of what the world around you offers. You aren’t in a “take” relationship with those around you, you’re able to offer your support to them just as they offer support to you. You are focused on giving. You recognize the purpose for your obsession is for unselfish reasons. You realize your obsession but still enjoy the rest of what the world has to offer. Good obsession, in this creative way, directs the flame externally. Instead of the flame burning inside of you, eventually engulfing you, the fuel of your obsession is directed outward and creates a spectacle for all of the world to enjoy. Obsession in this manner lets you create a spectacle without yourself becoming one.

Obsession creates and obsession can destroy. Obsession is a flame that will either warm the world or will burn you alive. Obsession is a path to the peak of existence or is the step to losing yourself. Obsession is obsession. Don’t get lost in its flames, find yourself.
