Decisions

March 6th, 2023

Life is a series of choices. These choices open or close doors for us. These choices can be meaningless in the scale of our lives or single handily shape them in a different direction. Speaking of hindsight recently, the choices and decisions we make, we cannot change. We do not know the bounds of time travel. What has happened is done. What has happened changes our future and pushes us into the present. Decisions exist because life exists, it is as simple as that.

Making decisions can be as easy as flipping a coin or as difficult as anything we have done before. The scale of decisions obviously changes on a case-by-case basis, but there is nothing enabling us the ability to forgo the decision-making process. If we exist, we must make decisions. Previously discussed are the ideas of just starting, just doing something, and having a plan. The reality with decision-making is any decision can feature any methodology for how it is reached. There are spontaneous decisions that can be made on a whim while there are other decisions that must utilize the advice of others and periods of time before being made. There is no one size fit all process for decision-making other than the fact that we must make our choice.

There is no denying decision-making is hard. As meaningless as “What do we get for dinner?” Is sometimes a question we find ourselves unable to answer. Now imagine decisions that can shape the course of our lives:

“Do I make this career change?”

“Do I marry this person?”

“Do I move across the country?”

“Do I go to this school?”

The hardest decisions are the choices where we are entering the unknown or when there is more than one good option. Life-changing decisions tend to fall into these categories. When we do not know what exactly our choice will bring us, we may be scared to enter the unknown. When we have multiple good options we find ourselves questioning if the choice we do not make is actually the better one. Fear of outcome can hold us back from deciding but when we make these decisions, we open ourselves up for new experiences, new ways of life, and new opportunities. Fear to decide can leave us stuck in complacency. Sometimes the best life choices come from taking a leap of faith. Every decision in our life has brought us exactly to where we are today. What is the next decision that will shape our future? What choice will we make? Only time will tell, but a decision will be made one way or the other.
